The Quebec Capitales got out to an early lead and never looked back, stunning the Schaumburg Boomers with a 6-3 road win in Game 1 of the Frontier League Championship Series, as seen exclusively on FloBaseball.
Game 2 of the best-of-five series is set for 6:30 PM CT on Thursday night before shifting to Quebec on Saturday night for Game 3 and any other remaining necessary contests, which can all be seen on FloBaseball.
Quebec got to Boomers starter Luis Perez early and often on Wednesday, striking for five runs in the first three innings off of the right-hander. Yordan Manduley kicked off the scoring in the second with a sacrifice fly, followed by a stunning double steal in which Jonathan Lacroix stole home after a double down the left field line, advancing to third on the Manduley sac fly.
The Capitales broke the game open in the third with three more runs. Ruben Castro, one of two Quebec players with three hits in the series opener, kickstarted the offense again with a one-out triple, and came around on Jeffry Parra’s RBI single one batter later. T.J. White doubled to move Parra to third, and both men scored when Kyle Crowl, who also had a three-hit evening, delivered the big blow with a two-run single to right to give Quebec a 5-0 advantage through three frames.
Castro’s RBI single in the fourth seemingly put the game further out of reach, giving Quebec a 6-0 lead, but the Boomers attempted to slowly chip away at the lead late.
Reigning Frontier League Pitcher of the Year Miguel Cienfuegos turned in another gem on Wednesday night, holding the powerful Schaumburg offense to just two runs through six innings of work, before giving up two runs in the sixth. William Salas smacked a one-out single up the middle to score Clint Hardy, followed by a two-out RBI single by Blake Grant-Parks, scoring Salas to cut the deficit to 6-2.
Schaumburg made things interesting against Quebec reliever David Richardson in the seventh inning by scoring on a bases loaded wild pitch with nobody out to make it a 6-3 ballgame. With two runners in scoring position, Richardson recovered to strike out the side to end the Boomers threat.
Frank Moscatiello and Franklin Parra pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth inning, respectively, to close it out.
