For the six teams that make up the Florida Collegiate Summer League, the 2021 MLB Draft was an exciting one, as 19 players were selected by Major League teams. The wood bat collegiate summer baseball league started in 2003 was developed to “advance college players toward their futures in professional baseball” — and for this year’s crop of draftees it has done just that. 

Over the course of the league’s 18 seasons, 472 players had been selected by MLB teams, with 27 alumni have played in the Major Leagues. Below is a quick look at this year’s top draft selections.

Gunnar Hoglund | Toronto Blue Jays (1st Round)

Seminole County Scorpions | Ole Miss

Just three years ago Gunnar Hoglund opted to forgo a chance at the major leagues to pitch at Mississippi. Prior to his suffering a UCL tear in early May, the Ole Miss hurler was expected to be a top-10 pick in this year’s draft, and some draft pundits and mock boards had him being taken as high as the No. 8 pick. On Sunday, the Toronto Blue Jays selected Hoglund as the 19th pick overall in the 2021 MLB Draft.

The junior right-hander from Hudson, Florida finished his career at Ole Miss in early May against Texas A&M, where the shoulder tear occurred. Prior to the injury, he had led the nation in strikeouts for most of the season, amassing 96 Ks and posting an ERA of 2.86.

Jud Fabian | Boston Red Sox

Orlando Scorpions | Florida

Ranked as the No.27 overall prospect in the 2021 MLB Draft, Florida Gators centerfielder Jud Fabian was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the second round as the 40th overall pick. His selection marked the first for the Gators in this year’s draft class and is the second-highest ever for the Florida program. 

Known for his range, speed, and instincts in the outfield, he also brings power to the plate having blasted 20 homers in his 59 games in 2021, ranking him sixth in Division I.

With respect to his signing, Fabian has some leverage with the Red Sox as he entered college a year early and was one of the youngest college draft-eligible players in this year’s field. Also, due to the NCAA’s COVID rules, he remains just a sophomore with two years of eligibility still on his plate. With his younger brother Deric joining the Gators this summer, he could potentially want to return to Gainesville for another season.

Tommy Mace | Cleveland Indians

Orlando Scorpions | Florida

Florida Gators ace pitcher Tommy Mace was selected in the Competitive Balance B round as the 69th overall pick on Monday afternoon in the 2021 MLB Draft by the Cleveland Indians. The 22-year-old posted a 22-7 record and a 4.37 ERA over his four-year stint at Florida. His 2021 season featured 15 starts and a 6-2 record, 113 strikeouts, and a 4.38 ERA. 

A fourth-year junior, Mace served as a starter from the bulk of the 2021 season, and while his stats didn’t size up to his previous work his talent was still on the radar of plenty of scouts. He had been projected to be as high as a late first-round pick in several mock drafts and MLB Pipeline had him ranked at No. 45 ahead of the draft, placing him as a solid second-rounder.

Justyn-Henry Malloy | Atlanta Braves

Orlando Scorpions | Georgia Tech

After transferring to Georgia Tech from Vanderbilt, Justyn-Henry Malloy instantly became an impact player at third base for the Yellow Jackets. As a result, the third-team All-ACC from Bergenfield, New Jersey was selected in the sixth round by the Atlanta Braves in the 2021 MLB Draft.

His .308 batting average ranked third on the Georgia Tech offensive stat-sheet for 2021 and he added 11 home runs and 43 RBIs. He also co-led the ACC with 46 walks, which ranked him 21st in the country for free passes.
