The 2023 season marks the silver anniversary of the New Jersey Jackals, and the Frontier League club has made recent moves that contribute both to the franchise's legacy and that of baseball overall. 

In its 25 years, the organizations has won championships across different leagues and been a home for some outstanding players on their baseball journeys. 

The Jackals also have helped preserve an important piece of the game's history when they took up residence in a new ballpark this year.

Team Overview 

New Jersey joined the Frontier League in 2021 after a few different moves, including a COVID-season All-Star Challenge. 

The club has found a home in the post-pandemic landscape, continuing on traditions established since the late 1990s. 

What Year Were The New Jersey Jackals Founded? 

The Jackals debuted as members of the Northeast League in 1998, which lasted one season, before the club became a part of the Northern League.

A four-season run in the Northern League, and another brief tenure in the restarted Northeast League, preceded New Jersey's longest tenure in one league, the Canadian American Association of Professional Baseball. 

Throughout the club's existence since debuting in 1998, New Jersey has remained a contender everywhere it's been — including now in the Frontier League.  

Who Owns The New Jersey Jackals?

Al Dorso purchased the Jackals in 2017. 

Dorso heads the Sussex County Miners, as well, and the State Fair Group. 

What Is The History Of The New Jersey Jackals Team Name And Mascot?

Both the name Jackals and mascot — Jack the Jackal — have been part of the organization since inception. 

The nickname was announced on Dec. 17, 1997. 

Per the New Jersey-based newspaper The Record, Jackals was "chosen from a contest that yielded nearly 1,000 entries." 


Have the New Jersey Jackals Ever Won A Frontier League Championship?

The Jackals have yet to win a Frontier League championship, though in 1998, they debuted with a title in the Northeast League. 

The organization's inaugural-year crown marked the first of six league championships claimed in organization history; five come from the Northeast, Northern and CanAm. 

Where Do The New Jersey Jackals Play?

As of this season, after spending the duration of their existence at Yogi Berra Stadium, the Jackals made the landmark move to Hinchliffe Stadium. 

Hinchliffe Stadium opened 90 years ago and is renowned for hosting Negro League legends, including Josh Gibson from the park's first season in 1933 forward. 

The Paterson-based Hinchliffe Stadium also boasts a rich history of hosting high school and college football. 

New Jersey Jackals Notable Alumni

A bevy of players with Major League experience have spent time in the Jackals organization, including Robert Stock, who after putting together a 2.85 ERA in his time in New Jersey, landed with the Cincinnati Reds organization. 

Stock debuted with the San Diego Padres in 2018.

Johnny Hellweg played for the Milwaukee Brewers after his time in New Jersey, and Raul Valdez spent five seasons in the Majors following a tenure for the Jackals. 

Among the organization's all-time standouts, pitchers Isaac Pavlik and Joel Bennett hold a variety of Jackals records.
