CAA Baseball Player of the Week

Bryce Frederick, Towson – Jr., 3B – Phoenix, Maryland/Dulaney

Frederick batted .636 (7-for-11) with two doubles, three homers and nine RBIs in Towson’s victories over UMBC (15-13) and George Mason (10-8). 

The junior delivered ninth-inning, walk-off homers in both wins, smacking a three-run shot to beat UMBC on Tuesday and a grand slam Wednesday against George Mason. 

Frederick was 5-for-6 with four extra base hits against UMBC.

CAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week

Aiven Cabral, Northeastern – Fr., RHP – Lynn, Massachusetts/St. Mary’s Lynn

Cabral didn’t allow a run in 10 innings of work last week, highlighted by a complete-game, four-hit shutout in Northeastern’s 9-0 victory over Delaware last Saturday. 

The freshman scattered four singles and needed only 97 pitches against the Hens, striking out seven and not issuing a walk. 

Cabral, who also threw a scoreless frame against Stonehill, improved to 4-2 and has a CAA-best 1.74 ERA.

CAA Baseball Rookie of the Week

Cam Maldonado, Northeastern – Fr., OF – Wolcott, Connecticut/Hamden Hall Country Day

Maldonado batted .625 (10-for-16) with two doubles, a triple, a homer, five runs scored and six RBIs in Northeastern’s 3-2 week. 

The freshman had two hits in all five games and drove in at least one run in four of them. 

Maldonado was 6-for-11 with five RBIs in the CAA series win over Delaware. 

He also walked four times and was 5-for-5 on stolen bases last week.

CONFERENCE NOTES

ELON KNOCKS OFF No. 2 WAKE FOREST: Elon got a solo homer from Tanner Holliman and six innings of scoreless relief pitching to defeat No. 2 Wake Forest, 5-3, last Tuesday. 

It was the first win for the Phoenix over a No. 2-ranked team in school history and first victory over a top-2 team since 2002.

NATIONALLY RANKED WINS CONTINUE: CAA teams have recorded seven wins over nationally ranked teams over the past four Tuesdays, with Elon (2), UNCW (2), Northeastern, Hofstra and William & Mary picking them up. 

UNCW visits No. 25 TCU for a three-game series this weekend.

CAA MOVES UP TO #8 IN LATEST RPI RANKINGS: The CAA moved up to No. 8 among the nation’s 30 Division I baseball conferences as of April 10. 

Seven teams are ranked among the top 120, led by Elon at No. 26, Northeastern at No. 36, William & Mary at No. 75 and UNCW at No. 76. Monmouth is No. 108, Delaware is No. 119 and Charleston is No. 120.

NATIONAL HONOR FOR FREDERICK: Along with his CAA honor, Towson third baseman Bryce Frederick was recognized as a National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball newspaper, after smacking a pair of ninth-inning walk-off homers.

TOUGH ON THE MOUND: Three CAA squads rank in the top 13 nationally in ERA. Northeastern is No. 10 (3.40), William & Mary is No. 11 (3.44), and Elon is No. 13 at 3.55.


TEAM NOTES

CHARLESTON (18-13, 9-6 CAA): The Cougars split four games last week but won 2-of-3 over Hofstra to claim their fourth CAA series. 

Cole Mathis batted .333 (6-for-18) for the week with two doubles, a triple, two homers and five RBIs. 

Mathis, Trotter Harlan and Jared Kirven all went deep in the first three innings of the Cougars’ 8-7 win Friday night. 

Freshman Ben Hamacher provided a game-tying two-run single in the eighth inning of that game and hit .357 with five RBIs for the week. 

Cam Dean was 6-for-11 in the HU series. 

Ty Good (3-2) and Aidan Hunter combined for a three-hitter, as CofC topped Hofstra 7-2 in Friday’s opener. 

Trey Pooser limited the Pride to one earned run over 5.2 innings and fanned seven.

DELAWARE (15-16, 6-6 CAA): The Blue Hens rolled over Lafayette (19-3) to reach the finals of the Liberty Bell Classic and won the series opener against Northeastern (10-3) to push their winning streak to six, before dropping the final two contests. 

JJ Freeman batted .466 (7-for-15) in the NU series, including a double, homer and three RBIs on Sunday. 

Bryce Greenly went 3-for-5 at the plate and earned the win on the mound with five innings of work in the opener. 

Eli Atiya picked up his second save after shutting the Huskies out over the final four frames. 

Joey Loynd was 3-for-5 with four RBIs, and Josearmando Diaz was 4-for-5 with two RBIs in the NU victory. 

Jake Dunion went 5-for-5 with a career-high seven RBIs against Lafayette.

ELON (21-10, 11-3 CAA): The Phoenix had another strong week, beating No. 2 Wake Forest (5-3), before splitting a Sunday doubleheader with UNCW in a big CAA series. 

Luke Stephenson batted .455 (5-for-11) for the week, which included a 2-for-3 outing against Wake and a game-tying solo homer in the opener against UNCW. 

Ryan Sprock’s two-run single in the fifth lifted Elon to a 3-1 victory over UNCW in Game 1. 

Liam Dabagian (2-0) got the win after retiring all seven Seahawks he faced and fanning three. 

Tanner Holliman hit his eighth homer of the season against Wake to start the rally from a 3-0 deficit. 

Spencer Bauer tossed 3.2 scoreless innings of relief last week and lowered his season ERA to 0.44.

HOFSTRA (11-19, 6-9 CAA): The Pride had a 1-3 week on the road, falling 5-0 at Rutgers and losing 2-of-3 at Charleston.

Zach Bailey went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs in Sunday’s 5-4 win over CofC and drove in five runs for the week. 

Kevin Bruggeman added three hits in the victory and was 5-for-12 in the series. 

Brian Morrell was 2-for-2 with four RBIs in the second game of Friday’s twinbill. 

Brad Camarda (3-1) recorded his 16th career win on Sunday, moving into a tie for second on Hofstra’s all-time list. 

Michael O’Hanlon earned his fifth save of the season. 

John Mikolaicyk limited the Cougars to one run over 4.1 innings in Friday’s second game and struck out five.

MONMOUTH (12-15, 3-10 CAA): The Hawks are on a three-game winning streak after outslugging Saint Peter’s (19-11) and NJIT (16-3) and then blanking CAA foe North Carolina A&T (2-0). 

Reed Interdonato (2-2) held A&T to just two hits over six scoreless innings, and Dante Ciaramella and Ryan Bearse combined to retire the final nine batters of the game. 

James Harmstead provided all of the offense at A&T with a pair of solo homers and batted .500 (6-for-12) with eight RBIs for the week. He drove in three runs against SPU and NJIT. 

Freshman Matt Scrivanic made his second career start against SPU and was 4-for-5 with a double and four RBIs. 

Austin Denlinger and Phil Stahl drove in five runs apiece last week.

NORTH CAROLINA A&T (13-15, 6-7 CAA): The Aggies suffered a 2-0 setback to Monmouth on Sunday in their only action of the week. They had three other games canceled. 

Xavier Meachem limited the Hawks to one run on three hits over the first six innings, and Jake Delisi followed with two scoreless frames. 

Tre Williams had one of the Aggies’ two hits against the Hawks and is batting a team-best .338 for the year. 

Leadoff man Shemar Dalton added a double in the game. 

A&T hosts High Point on Wednesday, before a weekend CAA series at Delaware.

UNCW (19-11, 10-4 CAA): The Seahawks split a Sunday doubleheader at Elon, rallying for a 7-6 victory in nightcap, after losing the opener, 3-1. 

Six of UNCW’s eight runs came via the long ball. 

Jac Croom hit solo shots in his first two at-bats in Game 2, while Dillon Lifreri had a solo homer in the opener and a two-run homer in Game 2 that put UNCW up 6-5 in the eighth. 

Freshman Connor Kane earned his first collegiate win, allowing one run on two hits over three innings and striking out three. 

He has given up only one run in eight innings during three CAA appearances. 

Alec DeMartino and Taber Mongero added three hits apiece in the second game, and John Newton hit his fifth homer of the season.

NORTHEASTERN (25-6, 8-4 CAA): The Huskies went 3-2 in a five-game homestand, including a pair of CAA wins over Delaware. 

NU blanked Delaware 9-0 on Saturday behind a complete-game, four-hit shutout from freshman Aiven Cabral (4-2). He fanned seven and now has 42 strikeouts on the season, compared to only two walks. 

Eric Yost (2-0) held the Hens to one run over six innings Sunday and struck out nine. 

Cam Maldonado batted .625 (10-for-16) for the week with a pair of hits in all five games. 

Mike Sirota smacked a grand slam in Sunday’s 20-5 victory. 

Tyler MacGregor homered twice against Harvard and once against Stonehill to raise his season total to nine. 

Will Jones fanned seven in three shutout innings against Stonehill.

STONY BROOK (12-17, 4-8 CAA): The Seawolves had a 2-2 week, opening with a 6-5 win over Manhattan and closing with a 6-2 victory against William & Mary. 

Josh O’Neill (3-3) held the Tribe to just one run on four hits over 7.1 innings and struck out a career-high 10 in his first CAA start of the year Sunday. 

Kyle Johnson saw action in three of the four games and picked up a win and a save. 

Matt Brown-Eiring drove in six runs last week, with at least one RBI in all four games. 

Matt DeStefano went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in Sunday’s win over W&M. 

Derek Yalon was 2-for-5 and knocked in three against the Tribe on Friday.

TOWSON (10-22, 2-10 CAA): The Tigers defeated UMBC (15-13) and George Mason (10-8) in dramatic fashion last week. 

Towson scored six in the ninth inning against UMBC, as Josh Janove hit a three-run homer to set the stage for a three-run walk-off blast from Bryce Frederick. 

Against George Mason, the Tigers tallied seven runs in the ninth inning, capped by a Frederick walk-off grand slam. 

Frederick batted .636 (7-for-11) with two doubles, three homers and nine RBIs for the week, while Janove was 2-for-4 and knocked in five against UMBC. 

Harper Sy added a three-run homer in the UMBC win, while Reyce Curnane was 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs against Mason. 

Tyler Russo tossed two shutout innings to get the win against UMBC.

WILLIAM & MARY (21-12, 7-5 CAA): The Tribe ran their winning streak to eight with a 13-3 victory at Maryland and a pair of triumphs (8-7, 7-5) at Stony Brook, before a Sunday setback at SBU. 

Ben Williamson batted .455 (5-for-11) with five runs scored and five RBIs at SBU and is hitting a league-best .433 for the season. 

Lucas Carmichael batted .600 (6-for-10) and scored four times from the leadoff spot at SBU. 

Joe Delossantos’ two-run double in the 10th inning gave the Tribe a 7-5 win Saturday. 

Cory Wall (4-2) held the Seawolves to two hits over the final 4.1 innings to earn the win in that game. 

Tom Mayer and Rojo Prarie each tossed three shutout innings and combined for seven strikeouts at Maryland.
